26 Labour Unions protest for labour rights, Rally on Mall Road Lahore
Workers Demanded 100 percent increase in salaries in next budget 2011-2012, Vow to continue protests if government does not accommodate demands in budget:

LAHORE (Tuesdat, May 24, 2011) : More than 26 labour organisations together on Tuesday held a rally and a three-hour long sit-in on the Mall Road, protesting against the current price hike, unemployment, load shedding and asking for increase in labourers’ salaries.

Call for the rally and the sit-in was given by the Labour Party Pakistan (LPP) to force the government for 100 percent increase in the salaries of the labour class as the current inflation rate had made life unbearable for the lower classes, especially the labour class.
Several labour unions and other civil society organisations working for the rights of the labour class joined the protest. Their purpose is to make the government agree to their demands before the budget for the fiscal year 2011-12 is finalised and introduced.
The main organisations that united for the first time under a single agenda of opposing the government’s economic polices towards the labour class, included the All Pakistan Clerical Staff Association, All Pakistan Para Medical Staff Federation, National Organisation of Postal Employees, Muttahida Workers Alliance and Employees Union of PTCL, Railway Workers Union, All Pakistan Habib Bank Workers Action Committee, Lahore GymKhana Staff Welfare Union, Pakistan Pensioners Association, Ettehad Labour Union Carpet Industry Pakistan, New Khan Metro Bus Service Labour and Haqooq Union, Sweeper Union of City District Government Lahore, Punjab Workers Welfare Academic Staff Association, Rustam Sohrab Cycle and Motorcycle Factory Workers Union, Pakistan Bhatta Mazdoor Union, All Pakistan Workers Welfare Board Employees Union, progressive wing of the students National Student Federation, Labour Education Foundation, Communist Mazdoor Kisan Party, Inqalabi Socialist Movement and Women Workers Help Line.
The rally was led by the LPP leaders Farooq Tariq and Azra Shad while a well-known progressive intellectual and political analyst, Lal Khan, and peot Baba Najmi also took part in the protest and inspired the protesters with their revolutionary speeches and poetry.
More than 600 labourers, including a good number of female activists, joined the rally that commenced from the General Post Office and concluded at Charing Cross where they, later, staged a three-hour long sit-in.
The protesters were carrying banners, placards and red flags as a symbol of revolution and were chanting slogans, demanding 100 percent increase in the salary package of government employees as well as private labourers. They demanded that the government fix minimum wage of a common labourers at Rs 15,000.
Farooq Tariq, while speaking on the occasion, said that although the government had previously fixed the minimum wage for labourers at Rs 8,000, factory owners and other private organisations had not implemented it as yet and were giving less than Rs 5,000 to the labourers which is an injustice to the labour class, especially at a time when the inflation rate is touching the sky.
Later, the protesters ended the sit-in and dispersed peacefully. However, the speakers at the rally had announced that they would continue with the protests if the government did not accommodate their demands in the upcoming budget.
