Mobile Number Portability System Ends – PTA bans MNP Services

Karachi (Wednesday, November 14, 2012) – Government of Pakistan, Ministry of Information Telechnology and Telecommunication has banned the subscriber’s migration on one network to another through Mobile Network Portability.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a notification to all operators, asking them to stop porting in and out subscribers on their networks.

The decision was taken on the directives of Ministry of Interior. The companies have been asked to stop the service of MNP to their subscribers with immediate effect till further notice. Pakistan has one of the successful country implemented MNP in the world. It was the first country in the region having nearly 30 million subscribers get benefited for availing better cellular phone services due to coverage and tariff.

Pakistan Mobile Database Company has been setup with the seed investment of five operating mobile phone companies in March 2007. Rehman Malik, Adviser on Ministry of Interior, repeatedly indicated the closure of the MNP system in the cellular phone sector, which he deemed caused assistance to terrorists and controlling law and order situation in the country.
