“Plight of PTCL Pensioners” : M. Afzal’s Letter Published in DailyTimes On Oct 24, 2011

The plight of pensioners
Sir:

The PTCL pensioners were very happy to hear of the rumours from the media regarding an increase in the salaries under the provisions of the Pay and Pension Commission formed by the government, until the recent budget announcement.
As per the usual practice in the past budgetary extensions, the raise in Pay and Pension follows the same procedure. However, this budget is more in favour of the current government employees whose pay is to be increased by fifty percent while the pension is increased only by 15-20 percent. It appears that the Pay and Pension Commission has been made into a ‘Pay and Pay’ Commission.
As you know, pensioners are mostly old and deserving people as they have dedicated many years in the service of a country. In these final years of their lives, and with most of them being ill, they require special attention from the government and the media. Their children are also of marriageable age, especially their daughters who require a dowry. Nowadays the employees have more than one source of income apart from their jobs as they are young and energetic, as opposed to the pensioners who are reliant only on their meagre pensions.
Through your esteemed newspaper, I request that this issue be given priority and be highlighted to the respective authorities so that the budget increases the pensions by 50 percent as well.
