Workers Want Free Units Facility back, Threaten Strike
FAISALABAD (June 22, 2011) – The workers and office-bearers of WAPDA Pegham Union and Hydro Electric Union took out a protest rally here Tuesday against the government decision of withdraw free electric units facility from the lower scale Wapda employees.
The activists were holding placards and banners bearing slogans against the government decision. They activists started their rally from FESCO Office on Canal Road and marched towards District Council Square where they staged a protest. They blocked University Road for two hours. They were chanting slogans demanding withdrawal of the decision and restoration of the free electricity units facility.
On the occasion, heavy police contingent was also deployed to meet any eventuality. Meanwhile the office-bearers of Wapda Pegham Union and Hydro Electric Union threatened to launch a countrywide protest if the government did not take back the decision in 24 hours. They also warned to lock the Wapda Offices and disconnect electricity supply to the entire city if the facility was not restored forthwith. Later the activists dispersed peacefully.
NANKANA SAHIB (June 22, 2011) – WAPDA employees on Tuesday protested against the withdrawal of free unites facility. Following the announcement by the federal government to stop the free electricity, hundreds of employees took out a rally from the Executive Engineer Office to the Press Club chanted slogans against the government. One worker was protesting with placing bread on his belly.
On the occasion, divisional chairman Shahbaz Dakhar threatened complete strike if the order were not withdrawn.
MUZAFFARGARH/VEHARI (June 22, 2011) – A large number Wapda employees including a senior MEPCO official on Tuesday took out a rally and protested for restoration of free electricity units facility.
He said that persecution of Wapda employees would not be tolerated. “We demand that the prime minister should return the facility of free units of electricity for Wapda employees. Carrying placards inscribed, the protesters chanted slogans against the government. They threatened to close all the stations if the decision was not withdrawn.
Separately, hundreds of Wapda employees demonstrated in front of Mepco office in Vehari against the government’s policy regarding unit elimination for Wapda personnel. Also they demanded that the government should restore the unit policies for the WAPDA employees otherwise they would stage protest demonstrate on daily basis from 9am to 11am and boycott official work in the offices.
On the other hand, talking about the protest, members of social communities alleged that ordinary people have no electricity for daily use and Wapda employees use free units not for their own homes but distribute and sell electricity to their neighbours. After the implementation of this law, they said, the government would be able to save electricity for ordinary persons.
Former employee of Wapda Sheikh Shareef said while giving his version that the government should facilitate the employees but this is the moral duty of WAPDA employs that they should not misuse the facility.
