Zong wins both 3G and 4G Mobile Licenses
Mobilink, Telenor and Ufone obtained only 3 G licenses
Islamabad (Thursday, April 24, 2014) – Yesterday Pakistan entered into modern telecommunication era by auctioning spectrum of third generation (3G) and fourth generation (4G).
China Mobile “Zong” was only unique telecom mobile operator who secured both 3G & 4 G licenses. Remaining three mobile phone companies got only on license of 3G each.
China Mobile Pakistan Limited (CMPAK) also known as Zong bid highest ($306.9 million) for one 3G license in the 10MHz band. Zong also qualified to get 4G spectrum license at a base price of $210 million.
While base price for 3G license was $295 million.
Of the total $1.112 billion earned by the government, Zong – which is fourth largest among Pakistan’s five existing telecom players – paid $516.92 million for the two licenses.
Ufone has been disqualified for the 4G license spectrum on technical ground.
Thus Pakistan three largest mobile phone companies, Mobilink, Telenor and Ufone only managed to receive one license of 3G mobile each.
